PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) says a railroad enhancement project is in the works to replace the overhead mast arms at the “S-curve” on Sioux Avenue in Pierre starting Monday, June 10 with off-roadway work.
On Wednesday, June 12, the SDDOT will set up traffic control at the railroad crossing in preparation for the existing mast arm removal at 6 a.m.
The operation is anticipated to take less than two hours, and everything should be off the highway before the traffic gets heavy at 7:30 a.m. Traffic will be controlled with flaggers to allow traffic to pass through the work area.
After the removal process is complete, the contractor will be off the highway prepping the site for the new footings and mast arms. On Sunday, June 16, the SDDOT will set up traffic control at 6 a.m. with work expected to take two hours.
Motorists are asked to be prepared for suddenly slowing and stopped traffic and may want to consider an alternate route between 5:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. on June 12, and June 16.
The Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad (RCP&E) is doing the work on this $217,660 project.
